Jayeon Yi is a time-based artist. Her practice uses tools and weights to explore movement - tools as an extension of her body and weights marking physical motions. Yi's recent practice involves videocameras in performance - the videocamera as a tool that doubles her presence and continuously marks its trace. Yi explores her presence among the relations between camera, performer, and viewers - how one’s presence can be perceived, how the camera interferes with perception, and what its psychological aspects may be.
Born in Jeonju, South Korea, Yi received a BFA in Painting and Printmaking, and Sculpture, from Ewha Women's University in 2011, and an MFA in Sculpture from the Yale School of Art in 2016. She currently lives and works in New York.
